Editors' Choice Paper of the third quarter of 2023

Research on the vegetation of the Arid Chaco in Argentina has been chosen as the Vegetation Classification and Survey Editors’ Choice Paper for the third quarter of 2023.
“Vegetation types of the Arid Chaco in Central-Western Argentina” is part of the ongoing Special Collection “Neotropical Vegetation”, launched by the IAVS regional section “Latin America and the Caribbean” in the Vegetation Classification and Survey (VCS) journal.
The paper’s research team consisted of:
- Sebastián R. Zeballos, Daihana S. Argibay, Juan J. Cantero, Marcelo R. Cabido, Instituto Multidisciplinario de Biología Vegetal, Argentina.
- Alicia T. R. Acosta, Universitá degli Studi di Roma Tre, Italy.
- Walter D. Agüero, Rodrigo J. Ahumada, Daniel N. Arroyo, Fernando N. Biurrun, Alejandro Quiroga, Raúl E. Quiroga, Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria, Argentina.
- Martín G. Almirón, Justo Márquez, Universidad Nacional de San Juan, Argentina.
The study provides a new hierarchical classification of the vegetation in the region. The results highlight that xerophytic shrublands are the most common vegetation types in the area, while old growth forests are constrained to areas with low human disturbance in the last decades, or to protected areas. The floristic composition of the vegetation types described reveal numerous species in common with other sectors of the Chaco of northern Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay.
